40% Sodium Bromide

ChemWorld 4627 is a 40% sodium bromide solution that is is used in conjunction with a chlorine source in recirculating cooling water systems to control microbial growth. The product is effective over a wide pH range against the microorganisms typically found in these systems.

ChemWorld 4627 is good on aerobic, anaerobic, algae, and fungi. The required chlorine converts sodium bromine to hypobromous acid. The is make the final solution very good for control of aerobic bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, fungi, and algae at 6.0 to 9.0 pH.

  • Feed rates should be 2:1 to 4:1 of 12.5% Sodium Chlorine to the Bromine ratio.
  • The total feed rate of ChemWorld 4627 is based on demand plus residual.
  • Maintain control at 0.5 to 1.0 ppm Bromine (total DPD chlorine X 2.25). A Bromide test kit may be used to verify the residual.
Also, in a large bulk water system, Bacteria dip slides are commonly used in the water system to verify the proper dosage rates of this product along with the non-oxidizer chemical.

For new cooling tower startups, consider our ChemWorld 101 Cooling Startup Kit. This kit includes the following:
  • One 5 gallon pail of ChemWorld Q-ALK-PC - This product is required to clean the debris and greases prior to startup.
  • One 5 gallon pail of ChemWorld 1334 - ChemWorld 1334 is scale and corrosion control cooling tower chemical. After startup, you can perform testing of your water hardness and alkalinity and we can tune in your exact chemical for long term protection.
  • One 5 gallon pail of ChemWorld 56 - ChemWorld 56 is a 12.5% sodium hypochlorite product that is required to kill bacteria. This is the cheapest easiest product to get your system up and going, you can convert to tablets or a stabilized bromide product after startup.
  • One LakeWood 140 Cooling Tower Controller - You will need to set the controller to feed and bleed the cooling tower water to maximize cycles and to minimize chemical usage rates. An optional dual biocide water treatment can be implemented after starting up. This is model 1239597 (which is board mounted unit that has the flow assembly on the left).
  • One 1167435 Cooling Tower Blowdown Valve (1" NPT) - This will be required when the cooling tower calls to release cooling tower water.
  • Two Stenner 45MHP10 Adjustable Head Pumps - One pump is required for the corrosion/ scale prevention chemical and for the biocide. Each pump is rated to 100 psi, which should be enough to feed the chemical into the system. The ideal spot to feed the chemical is into the return header of the cooling tower. These Stenner Pump kits come with chemical injection valves that will allow for a quick injection of each chemical into the side stream water loop that is used to monitor the cooling tower conductivity.
  • One complete CWTK-200 Cooling Water Treatment Test Kit. This kit contains every test you will need to set up and fine-tune your water treatment program.
  • One Chemical Metal Test Station Cabinet - You need to keep your test kits and lo sheets in one clean location. This test kit is ideal for cooling towers. Items in the photo of test kit not included.
How should you feed 40% Sodium Bromide?
In order to form a hypobromous acid solution within 15 seconds, feed the stream of 40% Sodium Bromide directly into your 12.5% sodium hypochlorite.

Do not feed the 12.5% Sodium Chlorine and 40% sodium bromide solution into the separate injection points into your bulk water. Feeding the chemical separate, will make the formation of hypobromous acid time much longer (up to 15 minutes). The faster the hypobromous acid forms the better the kill rate will be on your aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and fungi, and algae. Hypobromous acid is an ideal chemical for higher pH waters (6.0 to 9.0 pH).

What is the bromide/chlorine ratio feed rate?
In theory, you want a 2:1 to 4:1 bromide to chlorine ratio. Since bromide is a more expensive chemical start at the higher ratio and adjust based on your bacteria dip results. We have seen systems operate at a 2:1 ratio and others at 10:1 ratio.

Also, make sure you are turning your 12.5% sodium hypochlorite at a minimum of three months. The strength of 12.5% sodium hypochlorite rapidly decreases. You do not want to store 12.5% sodium hypochlorite for long times in warm or hot conditions.

I'm confused overdose rate ratio particularly the sentence 'Feed rates should be 2:1 to 4:1 of 12.5% Sodium Chlorine to Bromine ratio.' is this a typo and should it read typo to ChemWorld 4627 ratio??
This product should be used and feed into the Sodium HypoChlorite line. You would feed 2 to 4 times more Chlorine then Bromide.
